SEYMCHAN The place of fall or discovery: The meteorite has been found in a brook-bed flowing into the river of Hekandue, a left tributary of the river of Jasachnaja of the Magadan district, USSR. Date of fall or discovery: FOUND, June 1967. Class and type: IRON. Number of individual specimens: 2. Total weight: About 351 kg (about 300 kg and 51 kg). Circumstances of the fall or discovery: The larger specimen has been found by the geologist F. A. Mednikov during a geological survey. The meteorite hardly seen was lying among the stones of the brook-ebd. The smaller specimen was found at a distance of 20 m from the first one by I. H. Markov with a mine detector in october 1967. The main mass was turned to the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Source: Report of geologist F. A. Mednikov (Magadan, USSR) in a letter, VIII 15, 1967 and of V. 1. Zvetkov (Moscow, USSR) in a letter X 17, 1967. Two masses were found in 1967, total 323 kg. It was determined as coarse octahedrite, bandwidth 2.0 mm(iron llE). There was new expeditions on Seymchan meteorite place in 2004 and 2005. During the expeditions there were several find of different sizes meteorite individuals. Recent finds shows that this meteorite is close to Glorietta Mountain and contains NUMEROUS OLIVINE GRAINS!!!! SEVERAL SMALL INDIVIDUALS FOUND ON SPRING TERRACE. It was a big surprise after cutting the individuals that they contain few olivine grains and shows a nice structure. Meteorite is absolutely stable, no any rust going on it after cutting. The pictures shows metal structure, olivine grains forms, It is interesting that some individuals contain olivine and other not contain olivine. Some individuals has surface with fusion crust like Sikhote-Alin, some looks like Chinge, and some looks like Sikhote shrapnel. In large slices structure shows inhomogenous mixing of silicate and iron and looks like mixed mesosiderite andpallasite. There was one small oriented individual. Right now Seymchan (or maybe NEW) meteorite is under researching. |

| http://www.seymchan.com/ Seymchan — A beautiful new pallasite from Russia The Seymchan meteorite was discovered in Magadan, Russia in 1967. The original find was classified as a type IIE iron meteorite. In 2004 a new expedition spent several weeks camped at this extremely remote spot. A number of new finds were made, including specimens that were part iron and part pallasitic, and some beautiful specimens that were entirely pallasitic. In this respect, the Seymchan meteorite has turned out to be similar to the Glorieta Mountain pallasite. |
